To make a lasting impression on people you meet, you have to leave them with a good experience. No one forgets the person who treated them kindly when they needed it most. Of course, this also applies to the opposite emotion; people tend to remember those who mistreated them during their times of trouble. Just choose the memories you would want people to have of you and live them.
Are you interested in maintaining a certain reputation, i.e., the one that best represents the future you want? Then start building that reputation today. It may not matter in the long run what you stand to benefit from it; what matters is deciding what you want to be known for and then working to make it happen. Whatever you want to be is within your reach; it simply takes that extra willpower to do whatever your dream requires. It may not be easy, but as with most important things in life, nothing good comes easy. So today, choose what you want your value system to be, what you would like people to remember you for, professionally and personally. Think through this and begin to live the life you would like to embody the totality of that person called you.
Being you is the best thing you can do for yourself; the other is to be a better version of your present self, through skills development, becoming emotionally aware, and being a work in progress. Remember, if you have not yet become that which you want to be, you have to keep working on yourself until you have that future you once dreamed of. Your dreams are valid!
